Installing Linux on old computer?

I have a 5-7 year old computer in my attic (with Windows XP running on it), and since I am having problems starting it up (BSOD appears seconds after booting up) I figured I would install a new operating system on it. How would I go about doing this? I figure I would have to wipe the computer clean before doing so.
