Why does human flesh have to stink so bad?

I cut my finger pretty bad the other day and I now have a big stretch of exposed flesh on my middle finger. I went to wipe my eye and noticed a weird smell and come to find out, its that finger. It stinks so bad! Why does our exposed tissue smell like this? Why can't it smell like roses?
